(1)表示因果关系的词或词组:because, reason, due to, since, so that, therefore等
词或词组:in order to, so as to, by等
(4)表示对比关系的词或词组:contrary to, unlike, like等

the general house effect
the green house effect is not a new phenomenon. scientists have known for centuries that a layer of gases naturally surrounds the earth like an insulating blanket, trapping the reflected energy of the sun and preventing it from escaping into space that is what makes the earth warm enough for people, plants and animals. however, recent human activity has boosted concentrations of greenhouse gases and enhanced their heat-trapping ability. the man culprit is carbon dioxide which scientists estimate accounts for nearly half of global warming.co2 is released from burning fossil fuels and from clearing and burning forests.
there are other important greenhouse gases too and they cannot be ignored. cfcs, for example, may account for 25 per cent of global warming in the text century if their production is not scaled back. but carbon dioxide is the pivotal one. the un international panel on climatic change now says that co2 levels could double within in 40 years if present rates of fossil-fuel burning and deforestation continue. that means an average temperature increase between two and four degrees centigrade and a sea-level rise of perhaps a foot by 2050.
no one knows for certain how local weather will change as a result of this warming. but one thing is clear-it will be no picnic. indications are that the earth will be take place not over thousands of years, but over decades. and it is the speed of the change, which makes the precise impact so difficult to predict.
the most sophisticated com*rized climate models in the us and uk , agree that weather around the world will become more irregular and more extreme. in general, temperatures will become more towards the poles than at the equator. overall rainfall will also increase as higher temperatures boost evaporation from the seas. but the distribution of precipitation will shift. some areas will become wetter, others will be drier. in middle latitudes, climate zones will march poles-wards. in tropical and subtropical parts of the third would, warming will be less but the impact on a relatively stable climate will be greater.
global warming will also cause ocean levels to rise---though not, as popular wisdom has it, due to the antarctic ice cap melting. if this catastrophe occurs it will not be for at least another century. instead, sea levels will rise sim* because water expands as it warms. people living in low-lying coastal regions will be in danger. the world’s great river deltas, home to millions in asia and latin america and containing some of the third world’s richest food-growing land, could become brackish graveyards.
6. which gas is the most responsible for global warming?
a. carbon dioxide.
b. cfcs.
c. green houses.
d. other gases in the atmosphere.
7. what will happen if man continues to burn fossil fuels and forests at present rates?
a. all fossil fuels, like coal, oil and gas, will run out.
b. deforestation will give rise to the loss of co2.
c. the temperature will increase two to four degrees fahrenheit.
d. the rise of sea-level will reach about a foot by 2050.
8. why is the precise impact the global warming will exert on local weather hard to predict?
a. because the great changes in temperature will take place in just decades.
b. because the course of changes will last thousands of years.
c. because people are not sure whether the earth will be warmer than before.
d. because there are many other factors involved in this change.
9. which of the following is true according to the passage?
a. the earth, as a whole, will become much wetter.
b. the temperature around equator will rise more than around the poles.
c. the amount of rainfall will be the same from place to place.
d. the weather around the world will be more unusual in the next few decades.
10. it can be concluded that
a. the rise of ocean levels is due to the antarctic ice cap melting.
b. the temperature increase will take a gradual course.
c. human beings will have to suffer more from environmental damage.
d. without greenhouse gases the earth would be extremely hot.

job hunting has always been a headache for college students. though many graduates are employed right after graduation, some are not. most serious of all, some still have no idea where to go working even a long time after graduation.
the reasons for this phenomenon are various. on the one hand, a few years ago colleges and universities enrolled so many students in popular majors, such as economy, finance and so on that the number of graduates was greater than the need in the market. on the other hand, most graduates would rather stay in large cities without suitable job to do than go to the country.
i reckon this problem can be solved if both colleges and students take measures. first, they should research the market and develop special skills to suit its need. second, students’ attitude towards employment should be changed. they should go to small cities and country. there they can also give full play to their professional knowledge. in a word, if we pay much attention, the situation can be improved.

as is shown above, the bar chart clearly demonstrates the relationship between the education level and earning in 2010. it is obvious that well-educated persons such as owning doctoral degree and master's degree have a high salary than those who have relatively low degree. isolated as the figure seems to be, as a matter of fact, we can observe that the higher level of education you receive, the higher income you get.
people’s opinions about investment in education differ from person to person. some people say that knowledge could no longer change destiny. to them, it is not only a waste of money, but also a waste of time. others deem that education is worthy of investment. as for me it is no doubt that education offers favorable working opportunity and handsome income, which enable us to buy what we want ,please what we love, and fulfill what we dream, and correspondingly we are able to build an ideal paradise where life can be enjoyed to the uttermost.
in conclusion, we should realize significance of education, which plays a crucial role in personal growth of career. in addition, it is convinced that education is the prospect of a nation.
from the chart above, we can definitely get a conclusion that the more you learned, the higher your salary would be. the figures in the chart denied the claim that knowledge is useless. however quite a few people still hold the opinion that a higher education does no good to a better job since that there are many university students who can not get an ideal job.
what i want to point out is that there is more than one factor that contributes to the failure of finding an ideal job for those who got a higher education. while those who failed to get a better education will hardly succeed in getting a good job because they didn’t get the knowledge systematically and scientifically.
as the proverb goes like this, knowledge is power. education pays, sooner or later.

in china, there’s a saying that "the landscape of guilin tops that of any other place under heaven." in light of this, i will recommend guilin as the first destination of my foreign friend’s trip to china.
overlooking the li jiang river, guilin is located in the northeast of guangxi. the name was derived from the cassia trees of the location. the trees line the streets of the town with yellow flowers blossoming every september, filling the air with sweet scent. guilin is a place of breath-taking scenery. from ancient times, guilin has been noted for its elegant landscape. it features beautiful mountains, clear rivers, grotesque rocks and
mystic crags, which is a feast for the eyes. sitting on a bamboo raft drifting down the river, visitors can see the varied shapes of the pinnacles reflected in the water. they will feel as if they were in a scroll of chinese landscape painting.i believe that my foreign friend will marvel at the unparalleled beauty of guilin.
enhance awareness to guard against campus thefts
"if you don't want to wake up and find you have no pants to wear, you'd better put themon in sleep," goes a popular joke among students. obviously, campus thefts have becomeincreasingly annoying as they occur far more often than before. and it seems that the thievesare less choosy these days, with their targets ranging widely from bikes, cell phones, purses,pre-paid ic cards to sunglasses, bags, and even underwear. in short, anything that worth adime is likely to be stolen.
what makes students the easy targets? the reasons are not hard to find. but i believe ofall these reasons, the lack of anti-theft alertness is the most important. for lack of alertness, the students tend to leave the doors and windows wide open during sleep at noon or at nightin summer. for the same reason, they'll also leave their bikes unlocked before a store or by aroad, or forget to take away their personal stuff before they go out of the classroom to make aphone call.
these acts undoubtedly have increased their exposure to the light-fingeredmonsters.
in order to minimize possible losses, the students must stay on guard in the first place, asawareness of the thefts around often makes a big difference. to be more specific, thestudents should not hide any tempting amount of cash in the dorm. put it in the bank instead.besides, do not leave any valuable items unattended. take them wherever you go. inaddition, it's advisable to develop a neighbourhood watch programme with other students inthe dorm and neighbouring dorms.
search answer online
nowadays, internet plays a key role in our life for our various purposes, such as searching useful information or chatting online. however, as more and more people turn to the internet for help with their problems, people begin to take searching answer online seriously.
different people have different opinions. some hold the view that searching answer online can have bad impacts on people. since people can always surf on the internet to find the answers of their questions, they may get accustomed to doing it, and they are getting unwilling to solve problems by themselves. while others think that internet is a helper for people to solve a trouble.
as far as i'm concerned, we shouldn't completely depend on the internet. when we get into troubles, we’d better seek to find solutions. we can take the answer online as an inspiration to solve our questions, but don’t ap* mechanically.

upon graduation, virtually all college students will confront the problem of the career choice, which is truly a tough choice. students opinions differ greatly on this issue. some hold that priority should be given to take a job, but others take the attitude that going to a graduate school is the most critical factor influencing their future career choices.
as to myself, i prefer the latter view. a higher educational background exerts a tremendous fascination on a great number of people, with no exception to me. this phenomenon that the graduates have difficulties in finding job after their graduation can easily be found anywhere in our daily life, especially on campus. on the one hand, with the improved high education of chinese college students which directly brought the result that there are more and more graduates every year. on the contrary, job vacancies don’t increase that fast. more people, less food, which is the exact description of the hard condition. on the other hand, more and more people go on to pursue their master and doctor degree; more and more chinese oversea students come back to china to hunt better working chances. it is sure that the competition is more and more fierce.
therefore, it is high time that we took effective measures to improve our own competitiveness. that is the secret of success in the future employment market after our graduation.
deep reading in modern life
at the picture depicts, a father told his son that he should read dee* rather than merely pursue the quantity of reading materials. it reflects that people tend to browse and scan e-books without stopping to ponder even one question. the way we read is so superficial that it arouses great concern in modern life.
to be a better reader, we had better do as follows. for one thing, take notes about crucial details as we used to do. taking notes can avoid the phenomenon that the more we read online or on smart phones, the less we seemed to memorize. for another, classics deserve to be savored by the contemporary people. for example, some classical novels can be read free on kindle, which makes them popular among youngsters again. whats more, if we did not make summaries from time to time, nothing that we learnt from e-books would truly be ours.
in conclusion, when we enjoy digital reading, we should consciously conducts deep reading. try our best to keep those good habits which are acquired in the process of paper reading, such as intensive reading and deep thinking.
part ⅰ writing (30 minutes)
for this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled nothing succeeds without a strong will by commenting on the humorous saying, "quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world. ive done it hundreds of times." you should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.
范文
nothing succeeds without a strong will
sometimes, in our daily life, the easiest thing might be the most difficult thing, as in the case of some people trying to quit smoking for hundreds of times and still making endless efforts without any hope of success. the reason for their failure is their lack of a strong will.
in our modern world, nothing is simple and straightforward. something might appear deceptively easy at first, but as we proceed on, we will find that it is actually extremely difficult. therefore, we must take whatever we do seriously and be mentally prepared to make our utmost exertions. when we encounter obstacles and setbacks, we must ap* our strong willpower and persevere until we finally succeed.
for us university students, in our academic studies or in our daily life on campus, we might not be faced with insurmountable challenges. but we need to get prepared, right now, to take things seriously, try to cultivate our strong will, and be ready to pursue our goals through persistence and indefatigable will. i believe it’s the only way we can achieve our success.
in our daily life, there are many occasions on which we should not hesitate to refuse when asked for help. for one thing, when it is beyond our ability, we should give a direct re* “no”. for another, we the thing we are asked for is unreasonable or even illegal, we should say “no” without hesitation.
however, it is not the case in our real life. many people prefer to say “yes” when they should say “no”. some are afraid to lose their face, since they think refusal means their i*lity. some people are afraid to offend their acquaintances’ face, such as their friends, relatives and so on.
in fact, doing so is quite harmful. if you agree to do the things beyond your ability, the result will only be worse. the other might as well have asked another person who can help. and if you agree to do the unreasonable or even the illegal favors, such as cheating in the exam, you are in fact not helping the other but hurting him. you yourself will get into trouble too.
it’s no doubt that university campuses will produce a large amount of rubbish everyday, however, there are fewer college students paying attention to its classification.
factually waste separation is vital to create an environment-friendly campus. firstly, waste separation does great contribution to the environmental protection. since some of waste is recyclable, while other is unrecyclable, if all the students could voluntarily differentiate recyclable rubbish from unrecyclable rubbish, the risk of the environmental pollution will be greatly reduced. secondly, waste separation could save a lot of energy and time on its processing.
with the rapid increase in the amount of rubbish at the campus, rubbish classification does not permit of any delay. on the one hand, as the well- educated people, college students should act as hosts of the universities and separate waste from this moment in their daily life. on the other hand, university authorities should strengthen students’ awareness of environmental protection and suide students to separate waste in a reasonable way.
